Safe Church Training

We provide Safe Church training to all Uniting Church Ministry leaders and Church Council representatives so they can maintain safe places and programs, and to congregation Safe Church Persons.

Face-to-Face Training

The Safe Church Awareness training is in the process of transitioning to a new self directed online curriculum. This curriculum is being developed by the National Safe Church Unit to be used in each Synod. We hope to be able to make this available before June 2021.

In the interim and with some easing of COVID -19 restrictions a number of Face to face workshops have been scheduled. These workshops address the training needs for people requiring either initial or refresher training. The Refresher training is only available for  people whose last training was within three years. Outside of three years requires attending the full course as there have been significant changes in recent years.

Refresher $20 | Full $25

Yes. Any Uniting Church member of a faith community, congregation or presbytery can request to attend Safe Church training.

Training is conducted through Safe Church Awareness Workshops. For those required to undergo training, this involves an initial workshop followed by a refresher course every 3 years.

The Safe Church Awareness Zoom course is followed up by a face to face refresher in 12 months.

The training covers duty of care, child protection, protecting vulnerable people, understanding and responding to abuse including reporting, safe leadership, recruitment and supervision practices and relevant policies and procedures.

The Uniting Church, along with a number of other churches are party to the Safe Church Training Agreement (SCTA). The Safe Church Training Agreement (SCTA) facilitates quality, sustainable, accessible, safe church workshops for local church leaders. The SCTA is an initiative of the National Council of Churches in Australia.

The following online courses are endorsed by the SCTA and are therefore endorsed as alternatives to Safe Church Training provided by the Uniting Church. The course content will be consistent with ours. Please ensure you submit your certificate from these courses to the congregation or agency which requires you to do the training. The fee for these courses is similar to the cost of UCA face to face training.
