Royal Commission into aged care quality and safety

Sisters and brothers in Christ,

You may be aware this week the Prime Minister announced a Royal Commission into aged care quality and safety. While the exact scope of the Commission is to be determined, we expect that its work will commence early next year.

The Royal Commission will look at the quality of care provided in Residential and Home Aged Care. It will also consider the care provided to Australians with disabilities living in residential aged care, particularly younger people.

The Uniting Church Synod of NSW and the ACT welcomes the announcement as an opportunity to shape the way society and our church cares for the most vulnerable and ageing members of our communities.

The Royal Commission will be the focus of considerable media coverage and scrutiny of the aged care sector spotlighting the adequacy of the funding, risks to safety, human rights and the best system to support Australia’s aging population.

We can be very proud of our agencies — Uniting and Wesley Mission — who have a long history in providing aged care services. We remain committed to sustaining a safe and happy environment in which our residents can thrive.

We will work openly and transparently with the Royal Commission and, in the spirit of full co-operation, assist with the provision of information and submissions as and when needed.

I encourage congregations and all members of our Churches to be part of the discussion in your communities over the coming weeks and months.

This is an opportunity as disciples of Christ to pray, attend and contribute to how we value and care for the most vulnerable including our older people.

We acknowledge things can go wrong and there will be concerns when older people are hurt or feel unsafe in the aged care system.

If you have any concerns or would like to confidentially report an issue relating to any church agency services I encourage you to please contact:
