Church leadership creating space for the future
Thursday 5 October
The Rev. Jane Fry has been appointed General Secretary of The Uniting Church in Australia, Synod of NSW and the ACT, at the thirty seventh meeting of the Synod held in Sydney.
At her induction service on Tuesday 3 October, The Moderator of the Synod, The Rev. Simon Hansford said, “We thank God for Jane’s gifts, her wisdom and leadership. We bless Jane and her ministry. I am hopeful about what we will accomplish together, as part of the Synod’s leadership.”
Rev. Fry thanked Synod members for their affirmation of her appointment and “for the confidence you have placed in me,” she said.
Rev. Fry said that she has a strong commitment to the life and witness of the Church, as a body of Christ, in all of its diversity and complexity.
“Part of our challenge as a Synod is finding new ways to make space for the future, to strengthen and grow ministry that is responsive to God’s call.”
Rev. Fry believes that building momentum for renewal and change is a collective task.
“The Uniting Church can continue to be a prophetic voice in challenging times.
“To do this we need to work together to tell the transformative story of creation, humanity and hope,” said Rev. Fry.
“We need to regain the respect of the wider community, so we can engage emerging generations in God’s transformative work. To do this we must be genuinely safe places of sanctuary and hope.”
Rev. Fry was appointed Acting General Secretary of the Synod in 2016. She joined the Synod Secretariat in 2012 as Associate Secretary. Rev. Fry was ordained in 1995 and has been in active ministry in the congregations at Marsden Road, Carlingford and Artarmon-Chatswood South, and in Sydney North Presbytery as Chairperson.
