Leadership Experience Program – Expressions of Interest

Are you interested in board roles and governance in large organisations? Would you like to increase your knowledge and experience in governance and leadership?

The Uniting Church Synod of NSW and ACT is seeking expressions of interest for a new board mentoring program. The Leadership Experience Program is a new pilot program to match mentors with applicants who are interested in gaining experience in the work of boards and board committees.

About the Leadership Experience Program

This pilot mentoring program will give you an insight into how the boards of large organisations work and will give applicants an ability to discern if they would like to seek positions such as these in the future.

It is envisaged that the program will:

  • Provide participants with valuable experience in leadership and governance in a large Christian organisation, such as the Uniting Church.
  • Help develop a broader understanding of the work of Synod Boards and Committees amongst members of the wider Uniting Church.

Participants will:

  • Typically prepare for and attend four to six meetings of one of the Synod Leadership bodies including Synod Standing Committee, Synod Board, key Synod Board Committees as well as the Uniting and TIS Boards;
  • Benefit from having a member of the relevant body assigned as a mentor to discuss the business and conduct of each meeting and reflect on the learning experience;
  • Deepen their learning by writing two guided learning reflections (at around halfway and the end of the period) and discuss these with their mentor;
  • Have the opportunity to discuss personal leadership challenges with the mentor, as appropriate.
Time commitment

It is envisaged that participants will need to commit to a significant amount of time to be involved in the program. They will be expected to attend the regular meetings of the Board or Committee they are assigned to for the entirety of the program, as well as preparatory sessions and meetings with their mentor.

The proposed program would run from March to October 2022 and will include:

  • Introductory session for participants (2-4 hours)
  • Individual meetings between mentors and participants (1 to 1.5 hours) following each meeting of the Board or Committee to which the participant has been matched.
  • Participants preparing two written reflections – one in June and one in October.
  • All mentors and participants to meet together at the end of the program for a facilitated time of shared reflection on learning and experience.

At the outset of the program, mentors and participants will formalise a “Mentoring Agreement” that agrees and sets expectations and time commitments for both the mentor and participant during the program.

Expressions of Interest

The Synod Secretariat is now seeking participants for the 2022 Leadership Experience Program. The closing date to lodge an expression of interest is 31 January 2022.

  • How you believe the program will aid your development
  • That you have sufficient time to commit to the program
  • That you are supported by the body you are currently participating in (e.g. congregation, Presbytery)

Between six to eight participants will be selected and matched with mentors in the first year.
