28th Moderator calls for church to reclaim its role in the community

Friday, 29 September 2017

The Rev. Simon Hansford has been installed as the 28th Moderator of The Uniting Church in Australia Synod of New South Wales and the ACT and will serve the Church as Moderator until September 2020.

At his installation as Moderator on 29 September, Rev. Simon Hansford said,

“The Uniting Church in Australia has a vital place in our community, and we have a long experience in engaging communities with the gospel.

“In a very diverse and rapidly changing world, our church has an even bigger role to play as an arbiter of justice.

“In a world where the trust in the church as an institution has been challenged, we must again build trust.

“We need to be able to articulate forgiveness, hope and justice in ways that make sense in the world.

Those reporting ‘no religion’ in the 2016 census increased from 19% in 2006 to 30% in 2016.

“We must find ways to talk about faith at a time when most people no longer belong to a church, said Rev. Hansford.

Rev. Hansford has served in ordained ministry for more than 25 years, serving in rural and regional communities across New South Wales.

He sees his time as Moderator as an opportunity for Uniting Church members in NSW and the ACT to articulate their experience of God, “It is not simply serving those in need, but sharing the living hope and compassion of Jesus Christ in whom we find ourselves made whole, said Rev. Hansford.

The Moderator is elected to give prophetic and pastoral leadership to the Synod, assisting and encouraging expression and fulfilment of faith, and the witness of the Church.
